Are Online Classes for You?

Online college is an excellent choice for many students. People have varied reasons for choosing distance learning over traditional schools. At Broadview University (formerly Utah Career College), we welcome all students, wherever they are in their college careers. There is no typical online student

People who choose to earn college degrees online don’t fit into one demographic category. They are different ages, different ethnicities and enrolling with different levels of preparation and experience. Here are some of the students who become distance learners:

  • High school students
  • Military students
  • Adult learners
  • Part time students
  • Students using employee benefits
  • Students taking a single class
  • People who travel for work
  • People with small children
  • Retirees
  • People hoping to change careers
  • People with disabilities
  • People with transportation challenges
  • People who live many miles from a traditional college
  • People with unpredictable work schedules

Each student is different and starts an online college degree program for different reasons. Are you one of these people? Can you see yourself as a college student while working or taking care of your family?

Convenience is key

Whatever their reasons for choosing online college, all students benefit from the convenience it offers. They don’t have to worry about driving to school in bad weather, finding childcare or taking time from work to attend classes. They can listen to lectures, complete assignments and do required reading whenever and wherever they have Internet access.

A college program that might save you money

Although reducing costs is not usually the major reason for studying online, earning a degree online can be a money-saver. Students don’t have to pay for gas, babysitters or wear and tear on their cars. Another benefit of online: students won’t lose money because they need to take unpaid leave from work to attend classes. These savings reduce the cost of earning a college degree.

Less expensive, more convenient

Does the convenience and reduced expense of online college sound attractive? Millions of students throughout the US think so. In fall of 2007, 3.94 million students enrolled in at least one online course. Between 2006 and 2007, online enrollments grew by 12.9 percent, compared with an average increase of 1.6 percent for students who enrolled in all colleges. The sponsors of the study, the College Committee and Babson Survey Research Group at Babson College, concluded that online education would continue to grow.
