History of online colleges
Online college is a direct descendant of correspondence courses that developed in the 19th century. Students would complete their assignments and mail them to offices that could have been across the state or on the other side of the country. In the early years, students seldom received feedback about their work and if they did, teachers’ comments often arrived weeks or months later.
The first big changes — radio and TV
Technology evolved to the point where radio broadcasts allowed students to hear lectures and classroom presentations. However, once a session ended, students were still unable to interact with instructors or fellow students. Television, although it allowed students to see what was happening, had the same limitations.
The next big change — the Internet
The development of the Web changed everything about distance education. Students and teachers are now able to interact in real time using Chat, IM and e-mail. Students can see their grades, receive feedback on assignments and work ahead in the class – the syllabus is online, so they know what is coming next. And online faculty members are available by telephone during posted office hours, just as they are at our bricks and mortar campuses.
How online college works at Broadview
Students at Broadview University Online are well prepared to be online learners. They take a required orientation class that introduces them to Blackboard, a powerful software package that is used around the world for online education. Only after they complete this class are they able to begin their online programs.
If you would like a preview of Blackboard, simply go to http://msbcollege.Blackboard.com/webapps/login/ and log in using uccguest as both login and password.
Our online library – an amazing resource just for you
Just because you’re many miles from a college campus does not mean that you can’t visit the library. In fact, some of your assignments will require you to visit our online library. We have an extensive collection of databases, reference works, e-books, journal articles and technical papers and other resources. And we have tutorials to help you use these materials as well as an online librarian available to you via chat, telephone, IM or e-mail.
